22 Ways to Save Money While Holidaying in Goa

Have you heard people say that they can vacation in Thailand and Dubai for less than the cost of vacationing in Goa? Or that they can travel from their city to Goa by flight for the same price as they would shell out to travel from Goa’s airport to their hotel within the state? Well, they’re not wrong.

Goa, once celebrated as a budget traveler’s paradise, has become pricier with rising costs for transportation, accommodation, and dining. Limited public transport options mean you pay for expensive taxis.  Most restaurants and cafes charge exorbitant prices for food, partly due to high rents, partly due to the high wages that ensure the team can live comfortably in Goa, and partly due to the high cost of ingredients brought in from outside the state.

Yet, with some of my insider tips, you can enjoy Goa’s beaches, culture, and nightlife without burning a hole in your wallet. Here are some of the practical ways I can share as a local to save money while holidaying in Goa. Like I said, while Goa isn’t budget-friendly by any stretch of imagination, you can shave off costs in certain places.

Holiday in Goa On A Budget

1. Book Your Transportation in Advance

This is true, no matter where you want to travel. Planning ahead for flights or trains can get you lower fares. For instance, the Mandovi Express from Mumbai to Goa costs around INR 390 for sleeper class when booked early. Flights from cities like Mumbai or Delhi to Dabolim Airport are also more affordable when booked months in advance.

2. Travel During the Monsoon Season

Visiting Goa from June to September can help you save up to 50% on hotels and activities due to fewer tourists and low demand. The lush greenery and quieter beaches offer a peaceful experience, though expect heavy rain days interspersed with bouts of sunshine. This off-season travel can significantly reduce your overall expenses.

3. Choose Accommodation in South Goa

South Goa, with serene beaches like Palolem and Agonda, or even Majorda and Utorda, offers budget-friendly guesthouses and beach huts. These options offer more value-for-money hotels than North Goa’s crowded areas like Calangute or Baga. And they’re extremely cheaper than places like Assagao, Siolim, Vagator, and Anjuna. You’ll enjoy a peaceful stay while keeping costs low. However, if you’re looking to pack your vacation with activities, South Goa may not offer as much – but hey, you can’t have it all! Here are some great hotels in South Goa you can consider.

4. Stay Away from the Beachfront

Beachfront accommodations are tempting but pricey. Opting for places a short walk inland can save 20-30% on lodging costs.  Stay in places like Saligao, Pilerne, Aldona, Moira, or Reis Magos to experience a quiet village life, enjoy beautiful Airbnbs and hotels that boast double the space at half the cost, and yet, be a short drive away from the beach, parties, F&B, and more. Yes, this small compromise can lead to substantial savings.

5. Use Motorcycle Taxis or Local Buses

Motorcycle taxis, known as ‘pilots,’ charge INR 100-500 for short trips, making them a cost-effective choice. This works well if you’re a solo traveller; however, keep in mind that you will only find these stationed at the pilot stands at markets. Local buses, though less convenient, are even cheaper and connect major towns and villages. They are not very frequent, and you will still have to manage the last mile on foot. But these options help you avoid Goa’s taxi mafia.

6. Save Money by Renting Older Model Bikes

Renting older scooters like the Yamaha Fascino costs INR 300-400 per day, compared to INR 450-600 for newer models, saving up to INR 150 daily. Always check the bike’s condition for safety before renting. This mode of transport is ideal for exploring Goa independently.

7. Plan Efficient Routes

Using Google Maps minimizes fuel and time costs, especially in traffic-prone areas like Panjim or Calangute. Efficient routes ensure you spend less on transportation and more on enjoying your trip. This simple step can make a big difference.

8. Hire Self-Driving Cars

Renting a self-driving car from services like Goicar or Zoomcar at Dabolim or Mopa Airport avoids taxi fares, which can exceed INR 1500 for a single trip to Panjim. This is particularly cost-effective for groups or longer stays. Compare prices online and check with your local friends/contacts for the best deals.

9. Use Hop On Hop Off Buses to Save Money

The Goa Tourism Development Corporation’s Hop On Hop Off buses cover over 19 attractions in North and South Goa for about INR 600 per day. These buses have fixed routes and pass by each stop after precisely 45 minutes, so you can disembark, explore for 45 minutes, and hop on the next bus. This affordable service offers flexibility to explore at your own pace. It’s a great way to see major sights without breaking the bank.

10. Eat at Local Eateries or Grab Some Street Food

Inland local eateries serve authentic Goan dishes like fish thali for INR 100-150, compared to INR 300-350 at beach shacks. These spots offer delicious meals at a fraction of the cost. For breakfast, Goa’s bhaji-pao and ros omelette make for a hearty meal for less than or around 100 rupees, while in the evening, items like Cutlet bread and rolls from food trucks and food carts can satiate you well. Look for busy stalls to ensure fresh, popular food. Ask locals for recommendations to find the best ones, or hit me up on Instagram for tips.

11. Buy Alcohol from Retail Stores

A Kingfisher beer costs INR 35-40 at retail stores versus INR 80-120 at shacks or bars. Buying alcohol in bulk and enjoying it at your accommodation instead of at a pub/bar/club can save you a ton of moolah.

12. Carry a Reusable Water Bottle

Refilling a reusable water bottle at your accommodation or safe sources lets you save on buying bottled water, costing hundreds of rupees daily. This eco-friendly habit keeps both your wallet and the environment happy. Ensure the water source is safe to avoid health issues.

13. Book Accommodation with a Kitchen

An Airbnb or guesthouse with a kitchen that allows you to cook meals lets you save on constantly dining out. Even brewing your own tea or coffee can add up to your savings since cafés charge anywhere between INR 150-400 per cup. When you do dine out, having your own kitchen at the Airbnb/guest house gives you the option to bring back leftovers to heat up for another meal – food that you’d otherwise have to let go to waste. Lastly, stock up on essentials at local markets for added savings.

14. Attend Free Festivals and Events

Goa hosts free events like the Goa Carnival in February and São João in June, featuring parades and music that’s free for all to attend. Many villages have weekly markets that welcome guests – the Saligao Village Market every Tuesday at the Saligao Institute, the Pilerne Village Market, Aldona Market, and so on. Look for the respective market on Instagram to see which day of the week they are on and whether they are open when you wish to visit. Many of them close for events such as the village Church feast, the monsoon season, and so on.

The Goa government constantly holds some festival or the other – the Goa Cashew Fest, Goa Heritage Fest,  Spirit of Goa Festival, Seafood Fest, and whatnot. Each one is free to enter. Check out the Goa Tourism page on Instagram to stay in the loop.

15. Go on Hikes or Walks

Free trails like Dudhsagar Falls or backwater walks provide stunning views at no cost. These activities let you explore Goa’s natural beauty while staying active. Bring comfortable shoes and water for a pleasant experience. If you have local friends, they may take you to viewpoints for sunset, to quarries for a swim, to the backwaters for a bit of fishing – all free activities you’ll love.

16. Do Watersports on Weekdays

Watersports like jet skiing cost around INR 1000 per person on weekdays, cheaper than weekends due to lower demand. Booking in advance can sometimes secure additional discounts and give you an upper hand in the bargaining process.

17. Learn Basic Konkani Phrases

Simple Konkani phrases like “Kitlo mola?” (How much?) or “Maka discount dya” (Give me a discount) can help negotiate better prices with vendors. Locals appreciate the effort, often leading to friendlier deals. Practice a few phrases before your trip.

18. Befriend a Local to Help you Save Money

Locals can share insider tips and connections, potentially saving up to 50% on accommodations or transport. Building rapport with a local can unlock better pricing from their network. Be respectful and genuine in your interactions. Fishing around for prices with your local contacts and then booking elsewhere or acting stingy will not only put them off (it’s natural) but also deter them from offering help to others who need it.

19. Use Discount Apps

Many apps offer up to 50% off on dining or activities if you pre-book tables or take advantage of festive promotions. Check popular platforms for deals specific to Goa. Always read the terms to ensure the discounts apply.

20. Avail of Group Discounts

Traveling with a group? Look for discounts on activities, tours, or accommodations, as many providers offer reduced rates for larger parties. Inquire directly with service providers for group deals. This can make a big difference for group travelers.

21. Visit Local Bars to Save Money on Drinks

Local bars like Mafia Cocktail or Joseph Bar offer affordable drinks and a unique vibe compared to high-end pubs in Assagao, where cocktails can cost INR 500 or more. These spots provide a fun, local experience at lower prices. Ask locals for their favorite haunts. Keep your expectations in check when visiting local watering holes and taverns – you’ll scarcely find a “cute corner for the gram” there.

22. Avoid Insta-worthy Spots

Speaking of cute corners for the gram, those ‘vintage-chic’ aesthetics come at a cost that might make you choke on your artisanal kale smoothie. So ditch the cute-sy cafes with the perfect foam heart on their cappuccino, the boujee restaurant with its deconstructed spaghetti, and themed restaurants that handpick their basil under the full moon… if you’re on a budget, that is. Here are some nice budget-friendly restaurants in Goa you may like.
