There are around a dozen museums in Goa. Here are just a couple of them that I’ve been to as an adult.

Museum of Goa (MOG), Pilerne

The Museum of Goa in Pilerne is not your average museum. It is an art gallery showcasing the work of Goan artist Subodh Kerkar. It’s a vibrant, interactive space that beautifully showcases the art and culture of Goa without antiques and exhibits as you would expect in a State-run museum. As soon as you step in, you’ll be greeted by a collection of contemporary artworks that depict the essence of this coastal paradise through storytelling, history, geography, food, culture, and more.

MOG museum pilerne

From paintings and sculptures to installations, each piece tells a tale that will transport you into the heart and soul of Goa. And the best part? This museum doesn’t believe in just sticking to the conventional way of doing things. Nope, they go above and beyond to engage visitors with workshops, performances, and even events for kids. It’s an immersive experience that will make you fall in love with Goa all over again. The entry fee is at Rs. 300 which is steeper than a government-run museum, and that’s because it is privately owned by the artist himself. Pro Tip – Skip the documentary.

If you get hungry, stop at the Mog Cafe located on the premises and enjoy some dosas, sandwiches, or ghevane (Maharashtrian-special rice dosa) with the yummiest chutney. You can also head downhill to these Saligao restaurants located a few minutes drive from the museum.

Aguad Interactive Museum, Sinquerim

Nestled within the historic walls of the Aguada Fort in Sinquerim, Goa. the Aguad Interactive Museum transports you back in time by bringing history to life in the most interactive and engaging way. Visitors can embark on an immersive journey through Goa’s colonial past. The exhibits are not static displays of artifacts, instead, they invite you to actively participate and experience history firsthand.

As you wander through the museum, you’ll encounter touchscreens and multimedia presentations that provide in-depth information about the fort, the colonial era, the people, and the significance of Aguada in Goa’s history. You can even try your hand at virtual reality experiences that transport you to different periods and places, allowing you to explore various aspects of Goan history.

What sets the Aguada Interactive Museum apart is its commitment to making history accessible and engaging for all. It’s not just a place for scholars and history buffs; it’s a space that welcomes and captivates visitors of all ages and backgrounds. From children to adults, everyone can find something fascinating and educational within its walls.

And let’s not forget the awe-inspiring location of the museum. Situated within the historic Aguada Fort, it offers panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and the surrounding natural beauty. So, while you immerse yourself in the stories of the past, you also get to indulge in the breathtaking vistas that Goa has to offer.

So, whether you’re a curious traveler or a local Goan looking to delve deeper into your heritage, these museums in Goa promise an unforgettable experience that will leave you with a deeper appreciation for Goa’s rich cultural tapestry.
